Scripture: 3 John 5–8
The work of proclaiming the gospel has never been intended to be carried out alone. Throughout the New Testament, we see believers working together—some going, some giving, some praying, and some opening their homes. Each person had a part in advancing the message of Jesus Christ.
In 3 John 5–8, the apostle John commends a faithful Christian named Gaius for showing hospitality to traveling gospel workers. These missionaries had gone out for the sake of Christ, depending upon the generosity of fellow believers. Gaius may not have traveled with them, but by receiving them and helping supply their needs, he became a participant in their ministry.
John concludes:
“Therefore we ought to support people like these, that we may be fellow workers for the truth.”
—3 John 8 (ESV)
That phrase—“fellow workers for the truth”—reveals the power of gospel partnerships.
Partnership Makes the Work Possible
Those who go into the streets, communities, college campuses, festivals, and mission fields need faithful believers standing behind them. Gospel ministry requires prayer, encouragement, transportation, literature, equipment, lodging, and financial support.
Every person may not be called to preach on a street corner or travel to a distant mission field, but every Christian can have a part in taking the gospel to those who need to hear it.
The person who gives is working alongside the person who goes.
The church that prays shares in the labor of the evangelist who preaches.
The family that provides a meal or a place to stay becomes part of the mission.
The believer who encourages a weary servant helps keep that servant in the field.
No act of faithful service is insignificant when it helps advance the truth of the gospel.

Gospel partnership is more than donating to a cause. It is joining in the work. It is saying, “We believe this message must be proclaimed, and we are willing to help send it forward.”
Partnership Centers Us on the Truth
Christian fellowship must be built upon more than friendship, common interests, or shared experiences. True gospel partnership is centered upon the truth of God’s Word and the saving message of Jesus Christ.
We work together because people are lost. We give because the gospel must be preached. We pray because only God can open hearts and save sinners. We go because Jesus Christ has commanded us to make disciples of all nations.
The goal is not personal recognition or the growth of an organization. The goal is that Christ would be known, sinners would be saved, and biblical churches would be strengthened.
We Need One Another
Gospel ministry is not the work of a few unusually gifted Christians. It belongs to the whole church. Some are called to go, while others are called to help send them—but both are essential.

When we work together for the sake of Christ, we become more than supporters of a ministry. According to Scripture, we become fellow workers for the truth.
