Eternity?

Life, Death, What’s Next?

So many people today are unsure about what will happen to them after they die? Will they go to Heaven? Hell? Don’t know? Or nothing…you just go in the ground and it’s over?

The Bible is clear about what happens after a person dies.

“And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,”  Hebrews 9:27 ESV

You will meet your maker after you take your last breath. He is a holy God who judges according to his righteous standard. When he judges you, how will you fare? You might think, “I’m not such a bad person.” Well, by human standards, that may be true. But let’s see how you stack up against God’s standards…

Have you ever lied?
Have you ever stolen anything, regardless of the value?
Have you ever used God’s name in vain?
Have you ever hated anyone? Jesus said that if you hate anyone, you are guilty of murder in your heart.

These are just a few of the Ten Commandments. James wrote:

“For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.”  James 2:10 ESV

As a righteous God, He must judge us for breaking His laws, and there is only one punishment: “the wages of sin is death…” Romans 6:23

Death in this context means eternity separated from God and his blessings in a place called Hell…

BUT, THERE IS GOOD NEWS!

God has provided the only way to have your death sentence commuted. He sent His one and only Son, Jesus, to live a perfect life here on earth, and He went to the cross and took the punishment that we deserve as sinners.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”  John 3:16-17 ESV

If you want to spend eternity in Heaven, you must turn to Jesus for forgiveness. He died for you, was buried, and rose again on the third day to make it possible to be forgiven. If you repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ alone to save you, he will forgive you and give you the gift of eternal life. To repent means to have a change of mind, a change of heart, a change of direction. With God’s help, stop going your way and start going God’s way.

“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.””  Romans 10:13 ESV

Repent and believe the good news. Call upon Him in prayer today. It is not this prayer that saves you; Jesus who saves you when you repent of your sin and receive Christ by faith. You can pray something like this: God, I know I have sinned and come short of your righteous standards. I believe that Jesus died to take the penalty for my sin, was buried, and came back alive on the third day. I turn away from my sin and put my faith and trust in Jesus alone for my salvation. Help me to live for you from this day forward. In Jesus’ name, Amen
